Jean-Paul Sartre wrote in his essay, "The Hole", that [the hole]
presents itself as the empty image of himself, an excavation to be
carefully moulded about the flesh. These drawings, focused around
explorations of a deliberate and mechanical filling of my space, present
the body as a place for transition, one that has been broken down into
fragmented pieces each given its own (non)function. The suggestion of the
orifice conveys the anxiety of (re)location and the difficulty towards an
acceptance of this relationship. The piping becomes a metaphor for a
carrier and filler of the (w)hole, one partnered by the necessity for both
(de)construction and repair.
