"PhillyTalks" is a dialogue with contemporary poets, begun in 1997. Its
newsletter features a written exchange between two poets, each to the
other's poetry / context, and is available on-line at least one week prior
to the event. PhillyTalks, the event, presents both a reading by the
poets and a discussion that extends the newsletter conversation.
Frequently, the event is webcast live to include the participation of
poets elsewhere.
PhillyTalks is curated by Louis Cabri; PhillyTalks Online is co-curated by
Aaron Levy in conjunction with Slought
Networks. Past newsletters and select audio recordings are archived
and available online for immediate download at: phillytalks.org/library/
Introduction to PhillyTalks
As a discursive project in time, the idea of PhillyTalks is open to
continual reflection, adjustment and critique (we invite yours). Openness
to change becomes especially important as the series accumulates a
sedimental history. The first two newsletters were modeled on the book
review; this changed with the third newsletter, modeled on the letter (via
email). Responses by poets to newsletters 1 thru 5 were openly solicited
for 6; but for 18, solicited poet-respondants were featured in the
newsletter alongside the written exchange.
A technological shift occured with 17, the first newsletter available, in
advance of the live event, solely for (free) download from the web. Thus
the photocopied and stapled newsletter, mailed and handed out to a
subscriber pool, has been discontinued. Past newsletters have also been
made available on the web. Each PhillyTalks event generates its own
singular context and address, and 18 is additionally exceptional for
taking place in Calgary, Canada, where live webcast participants
contributed to the discussion. The shift to the web has opened to question
the live event status of PhillyTalks. For example, see extensions.
The library, and extensions, are updated regularly. All events are free
and open to the public.
