Torture Notes

Filed under: — site admin @ 8:51 am

Bolivia joins Argentina, Costa Rica, Uruguay and Venezuala:

“We will gradually withdraw until there are no Bolivian officers attending the School of the Americas” said Morales. Questioning the U.S. government foreign policy he noted that “they are teaching high ranking officers to confront their own people, to identify social movements as their enemies.”

Meanwhile, through the looking glass, Humpty Dumpty Rudy:

…asked at a community meeting here (Davenport, Iowa) whether he considered waterboarding torture, Mr. Giuliani said: “It depends on how it’s done. It depends on the circumstances. It depends on who does it.”

Will Alexander

Filed under: — site admin @ 7:25 pm

I’ve just heard from Michael Rothenberg that there was an error in the first information about donations for Will. Poets in Need is unable to accept funds ear-marked for a specific person. I’m trying to find out an address for Will, or some other way or place any donations can be sent. More information when I have it.

Disappearing

Filed under: — site admin @ 9:58 am

It’s another of those days: news of the death of Ron Kitaj, of the illness of Will Alexander, and of the possible collapse of the Centre International de Poésie in Marseille.

Ron I’ve not seen since his time in London, but I well remember him working on those portraits of Robert Duncan, Robert Creeley, Charles Olson and Ed Dorn. He’s gone, so nothing to be done.

Will has cancer and is undergoing chemotherapy. One of those (now) rare poets who has no solid academic position from which to denounce the world, he also does not have the accompanying heath care.

Poets in Need is coordinating efforts to raise money for him. You can make a (tax-deductible) contribution to them, earmarked for Will, and send it to:

Poets in Need
PO Box 5411
Berkeley CA 94705

In New York, there will be a benefit reading for Will at the Bowery Poetry Club, Thursday November 1, 6-8 pm (readers to be announced).

For C.I.P.M., which for almost 20 years has brought poets from all over the world (including the US and the UK) to Marseille for residencies, readings, conferences, exhibitions and workshops, the least you could do to help is to sign the petition here.
Just name and email: you’ll quickly get a confirmation email: that’s done.

The Empire of Ice-Cream

Filed under: — site admin @ 7:58 am

An interesting piece on the logistics of withdrawal from Iraq from yesterday’s Washington Times:

According to the Government Accountability Office (GAO), the military has some 300,000 “heavy” items that would have to be shipped back, such as ice-cream machines that churn out different flavors upon request at a dozen bases throughout the California-size country. And before it can be loaded onto ships, equipment has to be scrubbed clean to conform to U.S. Agriculture Department regulations. The U.S. maintains some 200 wash points in Kuwait. Helicopters have to be shrinkwrapped.

It being Poetry Day, that traditional annual marker celebrating the falling of more money onto the Uriah heap in the O’Brien vault, I couldn’t resist a quick parody of the most Forward poem.

Looking through stuff that’s been in storage more than ten years I found these two photographs: my parents’ wedding in the mid-1930s…. and myself at school, the year after the war (fourth from right, middle row)
