Clark Coolidge’s The Act of Providence is the first book since Ashbery’s Flowchart to remind me of the particular pleasure reading once was. It is as if Dylan Thomas and Jack Kerouac danced together in the cemetery of Spoon River in the light of a projected image of Joe Brainard flickering on fleeting clouds, while teaching the intricate steps to the ghost of Maximus. You’ll track it down, although the URL on the copyright page www.comboarts.org appropriately takes you to General Cosmetic Surgery Information. By chance today I found a folder on an old hard-drive with rough scans of the first (daily) forty issues. I’ve cleaned them as best I can, and they can be seen, with a note HERE

For almost five years I’ve been putting on this page half-hour chunks of music I’ve been recently listening to. I still get occasional emails asking what the files are and how to listen to them. There are several possibilities:
(a) to the right of this page, under the GMAIL icon, is a small player; click the play arrow at the bottom right and you should hear the latest recording and then cycle through previous ones. Further down the right hand menu is a button saying Play Channel Now which will open a window with links to all previous entries: you can select and play any particular one. Unfortunately these only work when this particular browser page is open, so
(b) you can click, at the bottom of the entry, on the “Direct download” link. On some systems this will open a separate, usually Quicktime, window whence you can play the file, or
(c) you can save the file to your hard-drive and then open it in any mp3 player
(d) you can go to the libsyn site where all the files are archived

A bus trip to Eastbourne and back to see The Dark Monarch exhibition at the Towner Gallery. I remember now a small Samuel Palmer, a couple of smaller Sutherland etchings, a good Paul Nash canvas, two Eric Ravilious watercolour/pencil pieces, a Michael Ayrton portrait of John Minton, a Bryan Wynter of Zennor Cove, a painting of three women hikers from the 1930s (James Walker Tucker), and the great Dadd “The Fairy Feller’s Masterstroke”. There’s a tedious Hirst unicorn in a room of its own so easily avoided…. and on the ground floor a short interesting Derek Jarman film. From the permanent collections I remember two Christopher Woods, a Gaudier-Brzeska drawing and a row of Ravilious’ lithographs.
