Note from Tony Baker, April 2nd. 2003

In truth I'm desperately confused. I knew this would happen - we talked about it so much - but for 3 years nearly we've exchanged more or less daily & his last one's still in my inbox, as it ought to be, so nothing's changed, so I can write to him & etc.... His strengths were so interior that we almost didn't need to see each other, he got it all across in his notes. I know, and today especially am glad to know, the nurture was mutual. It's going to take years for me to know how much I'll miss him. With Doug Oliver, he more than any expanded my notion of what 'kind' means.

Note from David Preece, April 2nd. 2003

As the man wrote, 'We mask emotion. Never mind.' But I do.

Note from Roy Fisher, April 3rd. 2003

...the last time I was with Ric. (Basil Bunting Centenary, Durham, June 2000) Except for a strange visitation when I was seeing Joyce in a huge Sheffield hospital the following summer. As I walked out of the ward past a mirror-image ward opposite, I saw, silhouetted, what looked like a porter crossing the corridor, maybe with a mop, and having Ric's form and walk. Shortly afterwards he wrote to say he'd hallucinated me across the car park of the same hospital where he and Ann had been visiting her mother.
