Internship in Editing and Publishing


Designed to give students practical experience in editorial and publication procedures, including training and practice in reviewing and editing manuscripts, editorial rewriting, editing; copyediting, proofreading, and fundamentals of layout and design. Students will familiarize themselves with the Chicago Manual of Style, commonly used by publishers. They will learn how to copyedit, from spelling, punctuation, and usage to printers’ marks. Working with the two journals of the Critical Writing Program, "res: journal of undergraduate research" and "3808: Journal of Freshman Writing," interns will be involved with the process of publishing a journal, from soliciting and reviewing submissions, to editing, design and production, marketing, advertising, management, as well as some of the legal issues involved with publishing.

Working with the Director and Coordinator of Critical Writing as well as the editorial boards (faculty and student) of the two journals, interns will participate in bringing two journals from manuscript to publication, culminating with a paper reflecting upon their experience. Internship includes a stipend of $500. Two internships available:
