Flaubert Readings at The Performing Garage

In the 1980s, The Wooster Group was developing a new production based on Gustave Flaubert’s The Temptation of Saint Anthony. The piece became Frank Dell’s The Temptation of St. Antony. As part of our early investigations, they read a lot of Flaubert’s writings, and in 1986, invited Richard to come to The Performing Garage and read some of Flaubert’s letters. Here are two short clips from these readings: the first is from Flaubert’s correspondence with Ivan Turgenevfrom the 1860s (the voice you hear in the background is Michael Kirby). The second clip is from a letter Flaubert wrote to his mother.
