Summer Workshop for Young Writers at the Kelly Writers House

for rising high school juniors and seniors

The Summer Workshop for Young Writers at the Kelly Writers House will be an intensive opportunity for a limited number of students. Because of our commitment to keeping the program small, and the limitations of our intimate space we will only be able to accommodate a small number of qualified candidates. Admission, or lack thereof, to this program will have no direct impact on a student’s chances for eventual admission to the University of Pennsylvania.

We welcome applications from high school students who will be entering their 11th and 12th grade years in the Fall of 2024.

The application for the 2024 Summer Workshop is available beginning February 1 via the link below. Applications are due March 1 by 11:59 PM Eastern Standard Time.

Our application consists of:

  • The online application form (which includes information on financial assistance).
  • A 300-word essay about why you’d like to participate in this program and what you believe you’ll bring to our small literary community.
  • A high school transcript (official or unofficial).
  • One teacher recommendation letter.
  • An 8 to 10-page writing sample. We prefer creative work (fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction), but will accept academic work, journalism, or other writing.

PLEASE NOTE: The second page of the online application, "Educational Information" is not required by this program since applicants are not expected to have already earned a degree. You may simply select, "I prefer not to disclose my educational information" here.
